Quality never goes out of fashion
J.C. Filtenborg was founded in Aarhus in 1855 and since its inception, has offered a unique focus on design and quality. A commitment that has remained steadfast through the years.
Once upon a time
Filtenborg started life as a wholesale business. Among
other things, the company imported and distributed
lenses and frames in Denmark. In its early years the
business was based entirely on agencies. By the end of
the 1970s, J.C. Filtenborg began to produce and distribute
its own brands and frames produced on license.
Fashion frames of the highest quality
Margit Brandt was the biggest fashion brand in Denmark in the 70s and
80s. The brand was also J.C. Filtenborg’s first license for the production
of frames and sunglasses and both lines were a success. In the 80s and
90s J.C. Filtenborg decided to expand into the export of frames. To further
this aim, J.C. Filtenborg opened a branch in the U.S.A while obtaining the
license to produce frames for the well known brand, Cerrutti and for the
Danish brand Poul Stig. Later, J.C. Filtenborg acquired the first license for
frames and sunglasses ever given by the world renowned Danish design
company Georg Jensen.
Pioneers in materials
J.C. Filtenborg also produced and distributed its own brands such as
FT- Titanium and Kirei. Both brands were made in titanium, which at the
time, was a completely new material in the field of frames. J.C. Filtenborg
was one of the first European manufacturers to produce in titanium and
in so doing pioneered the way for the rest of the industry.
Design that has evolved in line with contemporary trends
In 2004 the Filtenborg family bought THIELE and decided to focus on running this well known Danish optical chain. The production and distribution of the different license brands were shut down and the development of own brands were put on hold. Now, the Filtenborg family has decided to relaunch the frame collection under the name:
“J.C. Filtenborg since 1855”. A new line which meets customers’ high demands for authenticity, quality and design. A collection where
the past meets the future in a compelling way.
